You can prevent this by cleaning it occasionally by washing in warm, soapy water and drying it with a soft polishing cloth. If it does tarnish you can bring back its shine by rubbing the piece gently with a mixture of salt and lemon juice or vinegar until the tarnish is gone. Rinse the piece in water and dry it with a soft polishing cloth To avoid any tarnish you can keep your piece in an airtight container. We also recommend avoiding contact with perfume and hair and body products as much as possible.
